Biowrap uses a proprietary organic additive to add into the raw plastic material at the time
of product manufacture. It is mixed in at a small ratio of 1%, thereby not changing the
parent plastics material properties to any measurable extent.
Features of the plastic products are:
The purpose of the Biowrap additive is as a back stop for plastic disposal. All
encouragement is made to recycle or reuse the plastic as much as possible.
Ultimately however all plastic will be disposed of. Those products that end up in a
landfill and contain the Biowrap additive, will biodegrade away, converting their internal
energy back to a form that can be reclaimed by commercial landfill operators.
The additive is an inert organic
additive that is a food source for
microbes. The additive has no effect on the
plastic molecule. Only when the plastic is disposed
to a microbe rich landfill, does the consequence of
the additive begin to show its benefits. The
microbes see the food and start to digest it. In that
process, the enzymes they secrete can break the
plastic molecule down and the microbes use that
energy release as food to continue digesting the
molecule further. The molecule is broken down so
it is no longer plastic, it is not broken up into short
plastic molecule fragments.

The inclusion of the additive has no
impact on the recyclability of the
plastic product along with
conventional plastics. The additive is an
inert component and sits along side the
polymer molecule until naturally occurring
microbes are present to digest it. Commercial
recyclers in Australia have tested the material
and say the additive have no impact on their
processed material along with New Zealand
Recyclers RECLAIM.

The plastic product has no shelf life
issues that are any different to the
same conventional product. This is
because the additive is an inert food source and
has no impact on the plastic molecule itself.

No microplastics are formed as the
enzymic action of the microbes
removes atoms off the polymer chain,
they do not break the chain up into short
segments such as an oxo-degradable chemical
additive does.

The plastic will biodegrade away over
several years (90+% faster) to a biogas
and a biosludge.

Another benefit of the additive is
that is decreases the biodegradation
time 90+% from many 100s of years
to years or 10s of years. This allows a
landfill operator to commercially capture the
biogas given off and use it to create energy
during the typical lifetime of a landfill. This is
called green power by some governments.
